#OAWeek2019 Tips for Open Science in Hamburg

In the winter semester 2019/20 the project “Hamburg Open Science” (HOS) will host the lecture series “Openness in Science” at the University of Hamburg (mondays, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., University main building, lecture hall C).

Open Up exhibition LeafletsAs part of its 100th anniversary the ZBW – Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft (ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for the Economy) is showing that Open Science can also be exhibited. You can visit the exhibition “Open Up! How digitisation is changing science” in Hamburg until shortly before Christmas.

The exhibition consists of the thematic displays “Digital connectivity”, “New types of publication” and “Finding Literature”. It tries to make the black box “Science”, i.e. the question “How does science actually work”, more transparent to the general public. In the end this is the core of Open Science, as Guido Scherp – Head of the Open Science Transfer Department at the ZBW – also writes in the short booklet accompanying the exhibition:

Basically, Open Science is about improving the trustworthiness and the quality of research in a digitally linked age. The most important instrument for this is openness, resp. transparency.

The accompanying booklet, which is available in German and in English, provides a brief and concise overview of Open Science.

In the past, for cost reasons the TUHH had only a few subscriptions to publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley. A broader offer was only achieved through access to digital collections without archival rights.

As the TUHH is involved in the DEAL project, we currently have extremely limited access to Elsevier journals. This of course means more effort in research and teaching. Therefore we would like to show you different ways to get the needed articles: Continue reading →

Unpaywall: The fast way to Open Access Articles

Reference Open ContentInstead of paying a fee for downloading the full text take the reference to a freely accessible version!

There is now support for your access to closed journal articles. On our reading room PCs you will find the browser plugin unpaywall, which is available for the Internet browsers Firefox and Chrome.

When surfing on the websites of scientific journals, provider platforms or databases, a green lock signals the presence of an Open Access publication of the article after a few seconds. A click on the symbol “Green lock” leads you to the free full text.

We also recommend that you download the plugin for your own use, as unpaywall unlike other sites only identifies legal Open Access versions of paid content. It is also important to note that this open access version does not visually correspond to the publisher’s version, as layout and logos are usually not allowed to be used. Also, an embargo period must often be observed when publishing the preprint or an accepted manuscript. The older the article, the more likely it is to be found.

Catalog tub.find – new titles missing at present

In the course of the growing together of BSZ and GBV there are starting difficulties, which probably last longer. Therefore our catalog and discovery system tub.find is not up to date since 15-03-2019.

That is why we recommend not only to use our catalog tub.find for literature searches, but also to check in the classic catalog interface whether the title you want is part of the tub. stock. We do it too! Whether inquiries of our users on most diverse channels or locally or also with interlibrary loan orders – we look at present for security in both data base systems.

If you have any questions or need support, please do not hesitate to contact us at the service desk in the library. We ask for your understanding for the confusing situation!

DWA Set of Rules only with login

Since 2013 the DWA Set of Rules of the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) has been available via access with IP address of the TU Hamburg. Now, access has changed to access via login.

Please choose the website DWAdirekt and register yourself with your TUHH mail address at the link “Meine Institution/Organisation hat ein Großkundenabo zum Regelwerk” (My institution has a subscricption to access the Set of Rules”). You will get a mail with a link to finish your registration.

Afterwards you can access to the DWA Set of Rules via Login at DWAdirekt. Until now there seems to exist no search interface in English

The DWA Set of Rules is viewed in Germany as the general basis for planning, construction and operation of plants in water, wastewater and waste management, as well as in soil conservation. It makes a considerable contribution to keeping the cost of environmental protection at a reasonable level.

Writing – if it would be as simple

Be clear, relevant and original, argue well and provide evidence, be correct and accurate in content.1 A patent remedy for academic writing in one sentence? If it would be as simple!

Kleine Nacht Flyer 2019
The 6th “Kleine Nacht des wissenschaftlichen Schreibens an der TUHH” (Short Night of Academic Writing at TUHH), taking place in the rooms around Audimax 1 (Building H – Am Schwarzenberg Campus 5) on Wednesday May 8, 2019 from 3 pm to 10 pm, offers an opportunity to get stimulation and animation around academic writing and research methods as well as to practice writing at once.

In addition to motivational talks as well as workshops the program of the “Short Night” (Flyer) includes the possibility of concentrated and silent active work in a special writing room. Writing consultation is offered as well as consultation on scholarly research methods, on finding subject information and on knowledge organisation through reference management! Consultation is also possible in English language!

About one third of the program items are offered in English language:

  • Short introduction to LaTeX (Alexander C. Wawrzyn) and time for questions and practice LaTeX. 4:15 pm – 5:15 pm, room NIT E07
  • Reference management with Zotero (Beate Rajski). 7:15 pm – 7:45 pm, room H0.16
  • Reference management with Citavi (Beate Rajski). 8:00 pm – 8:30 pm, room H0.16
  • Finding information without missing anything important (Thomas Hapke). 8:45 pm – 9:15 pm, room H0.16
     

A “Round table for questions by international students (also in english language)” is offered by Bertrand Schütz, 7:15 pm – 8 pm, in room H0.08.

Application for the “Kleine Nacht” is possible through the learning management system Stud.IP. You have to be logged in when applying for the Night via Stud.IP. But you are also welcome without registration.

The “Kleine Nacht” is organized by the TUHH Student Counseling Center in cooperation with the students’ union executive committee AStA, the TUHH library, University Sports, and the TU Computing Centre as well as several internal and external contributors.

The TUHH library has been offering a German language weblog since a few years, which accompanies a seminar course “Academic research and writing” (Description in English) as a form of showcase. Some of the lecturers from this course, which is organised by the TUHH library and which is part of the module “Nontechnical Complementary Courses for Bachelors” at TUHH, will offer some of the introductory presentations at the “Kleine Nacht”. Some of the resources from the seminar and the blog are offered in German language as Open Educational Resources.

IWA Publishing OA Program

IWA Publishing from the International Water Association (IWA) publishes parts of its book program as Open Access. 14 relevant new titles are now available. Publishing happens in partnership with the Open Access service provider Knowledge Unlatched.

New online books from MIT Press

Access is now possible within the TUHH to online books from MIT Press with the years 2015 until 2018 via the platform IEEE Xplore. Further titles from the areas computer sciences, engineering and media (time range from 1943 to 2014) have been available since the beginning of the year 2015.

MIT Press, affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is one of the well-respected university presses in the United States. Its focus often referred to engineering content of long-lasting quality, which also reflects socio-cultural developments in technology.

Below you find a selection of newly available online books from MIT Press. In the moment the works are not included in the catalog tub.find and can only be found via IEEE Xplore.
