And in the library!?
For some time you already have found printed dictionaries and materials for language courses (books in our catalog tub.find) for loan in room 1.006 (in a corridor starting from the upper reading room in the TUHH library) as well as two [tu:speak] rooms as rooms for practicing German (1.007 und 1.008) equipped with two PCs each.
In the last years the TUHH library has bought individual e-books from the publisher De Gruyter from time to time. In 2017 the complete e-book program from De Gruyter is available within TUHH intranet. At the end of the year the tub. will decide, also depending on usage, which small selection of titles will be included in its holdings permanently.
As long-established publisher the schedule of books by De Gruyter includes all subjects. Here you find a selection of titles interesting within TUHH:
Field of mathematics
Field of engineering
Field of industrial chemistry (process engineering)
Overview industrial chemistry (process engineering)
Outlook on 2018
Because the publisher De Gruyter sells above mentioned textbooks quite expensively, it cannot be guaranteed, that all above mentioned titles will be availalable within TUHH permanently.
The TUHH library (tub.) spent 80 % of its media budget for digital resources last year. Following you find an overview on the most used online books in 2015. Most of its meida budget the tub. paid for scholarly journals.
The following lists illustrate the thematic diversity as well as the diversity of the publishers whose online books are part of the tub. holdings. Particlularly good used has been online books of publishers where tub. already has a large qunatity of digital books and journals.
The Top 3 have been taken by works of the publisher Springer:
Further heavily used online books (publisher based):
550 eBooks from the areas computer sciences, engineering and media (time range from 1943 to 2014) have been available since the beginning of the year.

Since the end of April access within the TUHH intranet has been possible to the online books of the publisher Wiley. Now you can find them also in the catalog of the TUHH library.
Until March 2014 we offered access to about 700 titles online. In addition, now you have access to more than 14.000 titles. Via the Wiley Online Library and its browsing function, after a click to view all products of the “Topic” you are interested in, filtering for online books is also possible.
All the books are available until the end of December 2014. Your use of the online books will co-decide which books will be accessible permanently afterwards starting from 2015.
The publisher Wiley is relevant for the TUHH especially because of its books in the areas of chemistry, process engineering and the environmental sciences. But also all other technical and physical sciences’ subjects are part of Wiley’s range of publications mainly in English language. Also the subjects of philosophy and the humanities are represented heavily. Below you find as motivation for poking a biased selection of Wiley online books from different subject areas:
Reflection about sustainability is important in a society, whose present and whose future depends on science and technology and which is urged to develop sustainably. This also implies reflection about science – about its characteristics, its theories, its methods, its purposes, its visibility and its benefits. Giving alternatives a chance within research and technology appears to be necessary for a transformation to a sustainable society.
The following three online books available within TUHH intranet support the reflection about sustainability from a scholarly view. They perhaps enable the conditions for a “transformative literacy” in the sense of Uwe Schneidewind. Exemplarily listed titles of chapters in these books illustrate the statements above:
- Sustainability science / Bert de Vries. 2012.
- Sustainability: Concerns, Definitions, Indicators. pp. 117-145
- Quality of Life: On Values, Knowledge and Worldviews. pp. 146-178
- On Knowledge and Models. pp. 215-243
- Environmental literacy in science and society : from knowledge to decisions / Roland W. Scholz. 2011.
- What knowledge about what environment? pp. 3-14
- From environmental literacy to transdisciplinarity. pp. 15-28
- Basic epistemological assumptions. pp. 29-42
- Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaften / Harald Heinrichs und Gerd Michelsen (Eds.). 2014. In German.
Chapters in the section “Ethics, philosophy of science and methodology”:
- Ethics for sustainability, pp. 63-85
- Transdisciplinary research, pp. 87-113
- Methods and methodology in the sciences for sustainability, pp. 115-144
More publications concerning sustainability you find in the TUHH holdings! Also more on ethics, philsophy and hsitory of science plus philosophy of technology!
