Why we applied to the ORCID Global Participation Fund.

ORCID is an essential service for us. It allows scholars to connect to their research results globally and across multiple services. And ORCID offers the option to seamlessly authenticate to many services in the context of research. This makes it possible to log in to a service that supports this with a central login, regardless of institutional affiliation.

DSpace is the open source software that powers the most publication repositories in the world. Over 3000 installations are listed in the registry. They are distributed over all continents. DSpace or the variant DSpace-CRIS is also used to operate TUHH Open Research for Open Access publication, research data and research information at the TU Hamburg.

What you should know when publishing your dissertation on TORE

At the beginning of 2003, dissertations from the TU Hamburg were published online for the first time on TUBdok the document server of the TUHH at that time. The first dissertations were:

  1. Sell, Bernhard: Interface characterization of metal-gate MOS-structures and the application to DRAM-capacitors. 2002
  2. Jungfer, Martin: Gegenstromtrennung von schwerflüchtigen Naturstoffen mit überkritischen komprimierten Gasen unter Verwendung von Schleppmitteln. 2000
  3. Wiehler, Kay: Tribologie und Fluidverhalten in der Dichtzone von Radialwellendichtringen unter Berücksichtigung makromolekularer Bestandteile der Schmierfluide. 2002

Meanwhile, the open access repository TUHH Open Research (TORE) provides a uniform, centralized and public access to digital, scientific documents generated at TUHH. These can thus be perceived, read and cited online worldwide!

One more note about publishing through a publisher:

Even if you publish your dissertation with a publisher, parallel publication on TORE is possible if your publishing contract allows it.

This will certainly have little negative impact on the prospect of a possible royalty from VG Wort. It is paid out less and less frequently. Although the Merkblatt für Urheber im wissenschaftlichen Bereich (Fassung Dezember 2019) of the VG Wort states, “The prerequisite for a royalty is that the reported publications stand in an appropriate volume in scientific and specialist libraries,” it can be assumed that libraries nowadays hardly buy printed dissertations for their holdings.

We, as a TU library, buy dissertations only when there is a justified proposal from users. We accept donated dissertations in individual and exceptional cases only if they clearly fit into our narrower collection spectrum.

Research Information System and Repository

TUHH Open Research (TORE) is a combined repository and research information system that provides a service for the scientists of the TUHH.

In TORE with its repository function, full texts of publications can be stored. They receive a DOI and thus become citable. Preprints and doctoral theses are entered as first publications, publications with accepted manuscripts and Open Access with the publisher PDF can also be entered in TORE. In TORE you can also publish your research data with a DOI.

As the research information system of the TUHH, TORE has been mapping the institutes and researchers, publications, third-party funded projects and collaborations of the institutes since 2019. Project data is transferred from the Third-Party Funding Department into TORE and can be edited and activated by project leaders and FIS representatives of the institutes. The library, as the operator of TORE, enters recent TUHH publications for the scientists, which are provided by Scopus. Missing publications can be entered by yourself: e.g. scientific articles, conference contributions, book contributions and books, doctoral theses as well as posters.

tub.dok becomes TUHH Open Research

Since 2002 tub.dok has been the Open Access Repository at TU Hamburg. Here you can find freely available publications of members of TUHH in full text. The spectrum includes journal articles, conference contributions, reports and, of course, dissertations and postdoctoral theses written at TUHH.

Now additional tasks are waiting for tub.dok and therefore it will be renamed as of today in TUHH Open Research. Continue reading →

DOIs for Publications on tub.dok

Often asked for; now it’s time: From now on, the DOI for your document will be displayed on tub.dok before you upload a publication.

This allows you to add the DOI to your PDF for better identification of printouts or saved copies of the file or to insert a quotation recommendation.

Persistent Identifiers in tub.dok

By the way, tub.dok supports different persistent identifier schemes: DOI (Digital Object Identifier), Handle and URN (Uniform Resource Name). Persistent identifiers are used to ensure that a publication can be referenced unambiguously and permanently. Of these, the DOI is the best known and therefore the most important one for you.

The named persistent identifiers are initially marked, but have not yet been registered. Therefore, they cannot yet be resolved. They will be registered after completion of your publication, if the publication is activated by us. We will let you know by e-mail. Please be patient until then. :-)

tub.dok is Open Source

The extension of the software DSpace-CRIS, which we use as the basis of our open access repository, was realized by The Library Code and is available to the entire DSpace community via a branch on github for subsequent use.

Shibboleth login on tub.dok

Login tub.dokOur Open Access Repository tub.dok is now integrated into the Shibboleth infrastructure of the TUHH. This means that you can use the advantages of a Single Sign On to publish on tub.dok and are not required to login seperately (once you have logged in on the login page of the TUHH computer center).

The former login with your TUHH account is not necessary any more as Shibboleth is utilizing the same login data. Authors, who do not have a TUHH account, but want to publish on tub.dok are still free to create a local tub.dok account to publish with this account.

TUBdok Relaunch

TUBdok the open access repository of TUHH started in 2002. With TUBdok, members of TUHH can easily publish scientific content free and unhindered to anybody in the world. You can use TUBdok for publishing your Ph.D. as well as for publishing your post- or pre-prints of article in paywalled journals (“green road”).

In the last few years TUBdok has undergone a couple of small changes, but it stayed more or less the same. That is to change today: it is the date of the TUBdok relaunch. A new layout makes TUBdok easily identifiable as service of TUHH Library. But of course there is a lot more to discover besides layout:

  • We have added more persistent identifiers:
    All publications will receive DOIs and Handles next to URN.
  • Choose the most suitable creative commons licence:
    Let yourself be guided through the selection process or even go for CC0.
  • You need to observe an embargo?
    Indicate when your work may be published, then let TUBdok do the rest.
  • Subscribe to new publications:
    Stay up-to-date with new publications via RSS or email.

There are about 1,200 publications on TUBdok already. And of course all of them will stay accessible via URN and their old URL. Additionally they are assigned Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). DOIs are the most commonly used identifiers in online publication business.

1,000 Documents on TUBdok

We made the four digits! Since two weeks there are exactly 1,000 publications in our TUBdok repository. Number 1,000 has been published von 2 May and is titled  “Numerische Analyse des Nachstroms und Propellereffektivität am manövrierenden Schiff” by Hendrik Vorhölter. In case you do not know TUBdok: in our institutional repository, all member of TUHH can publish their scientific documents as Open Access. Right now there are for example 88 Dissertationen of TUHH, the digital edition of TUHH-Spektrum and the Schriftenreihe Schiffbau.
