New to the Library? – Loans

Loan

You can borrow books from us independently at the self-checkout desk during opening hours. You will need your library card to do so. The loan period for books is 4 weeks.

You can also obtain locker keys, charging cables and USB sticks from the ServicePoint. Shorter loan periods apply to these items.

So-called reference copies (“Präsenzexemplar”, marked with a red P) and magazines are excluded from borrowing. They can only be used within the library.

Returns

You can also return books at the self-checkout desks. The process is the same as borrowing, except that you do not need your library card. Afterwards, place the books on the white shelf next to the self-checkout desks and we will return them to their original location.

Books borrowed from us can also be returned at the Hamburg State and University Library (Stabi). Conversely, we also accept books from the Stabi.

Locker keys, charging cables and USB sticks that have been borrowed can be returned to the ServicePoint. If this is not staffed, you can use the return box at the self-checkout machines by the lift.

Extending loan periods

If the book is not reserved by another user, you can extend the loan period up to eight times online via your library account. Please note the loan period and renew it in good time, preferably one to two days before it expires. Once you exceed the loan period, renewal is no longer possible and fees will be charged.

Order and reserve books

In our magazine, you will find additional books that are also available for loan. These must first be ordered via our online catalogue.

You can also reserve books that are currently on loan free of charge via the library catalogue.

As soon as a book is ready for you, we will notify you by email. You will then find the book on the collection shelf under the first letter of your surname and the last four digits of your library card number. All you have to do then is borrow it at a self-checkout machine.
