The TUHH supports projects and initiatives that advocate an approach to scholarly communication that is oriented towards the common good and does not work with profit-oriented business models. These include cost-transparent financing models for open access publishing without author fees (APC) on the one hand, and science-led infrastructure services on the other.
Diamond Open Access
Diamond Open Access refers to a publication model for freely accessible research publications, the costs of which are not borne by the authors themselves (e. g. as APCs as with Gold Open Access publications), but by scientific institutions, professional societies or funding organizations. In recent years, this model has gained increasing importance in science policy. Widely regarded as the “fairest” Open Access approach, it enables researchers to participate regardless of their budgets, disciplines, institutions or regions.

KOALA
The KOALA consortium service organizes joint financing models for open access publishing. The operating costs of the journals are borne by libraries and information infrastructure facilities, so there are no author fees. The TUHH supports the Mathematics & Informatics Consortium 2024-2026.

Subscribe 2 Open
Journals with the S2O model are made open access and the corresponding APCs are waived if the subscription fees are sufficient. The TUB subscribes to various journals as part of S2O, including the Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics and Annual Review of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Some publishers, such as the American Society for Microbiology, now charge hidden author fees.
Infrastructure
Scholar-led infrastructure services are committed to a public good-oriented approach to scientific communication. They maintain publication platforms and databases, assign persistent identifiers, and develop open source software. They are financed by funding contributions from information infrastructure institutions.
arXiv
arXiv is a globally used open access platform on which preprints from technical and scientific disciplines are published. Many TUHH researchers upload their preprints here.
DataCite
DataCite is a global, non-profit organization that provides DOIs for research data and all other research results. It thus provides a central metadata standard for TUHH Open Research (TORE).
DSpace
DSpace is an open source software on which TUHH Open Research (TORE) operates.
DOAJ
The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is an independent directory of quality-assured open access journals. TUHH members can check the reputability of a journal here.

ORCID
The Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a globally supported non-profit organization that enables scientists to maintain their identity via a persistent identifier independent of commercial platforms. We integrate the ORCID of TUHH researchers into TORE.

Portico
Portico is a system used by libraries and publishers for the long-term archiving and availability of digital content. If the publisher’s server fails, Portico ensures access to the e-media licensed by us.
