New to the Library? 2. Loans

Loan

You can borrow books independently from the self-checkout station during the entire opening hours. The loan period is 4 weeks.

You will find the stations in the entrance area. This is how borrowing works:

  • place the book on the glass plate (also in a stack)
  • Tap on „lending“
  • Scan library card
  • Enter your password
  • Confirm with “Done”.

So-called reference copies (marked with a red P) and journals are excluded from borrowing.

Self-checkout

Returns

You can also return books at our self-checkout stations in front of the lift. Please place them on the shelf next to it afterwards. You do not need a library card to return books. Returning books by post is possible, but at your own risk.

Books borrowed from us can also be returned to the Hamburg State and University Library. Conversely, books from the Hamburg State and University Library can be returned to us – during the day at the ServicePoint, in the evening please use our white return box at the entrance.

Extending loan periods

If the book is not reserved by another user, you can extend the loan period up to eight times online via your library account. Please pay attention to the loan period and extend it in due time, preferably one to two days before expiration. As soon as you exceed the loan period, renewal is no longer possible and fees will be charged.

Ordered books

In our closed stack you will find other books that can also be borrowed. You must first order these via our online catalogue. You can also reserve books currently on loan via the library catalogue.

We will inform you by e-mail as soon as your closed stack order or reservation is ready on the pick-up shelf (next to the ServicePoint). You then have 7 working days to collect the item.

You will find the book on the pick-up shelf under the first letter of your last name and the last 4 digits of your library card. If you want to take the book with you, you only have to check it out at the self-checkout station.
